Odzi police officer faces 3 counts of criminal abuse of office

An Odzi police officer has been jailed on charges of demanding kickbacks from mbanje sellers.

Honest Bhunu (26) yesterday appeared before Perseverance Makhala, Mutare Magistrate, facing three counts of criminal abuse of office. Bhunu, who is disputing the charges, was awarded $100 bail and trial date was set for March 6.

Prosecutor Fletcher Karombe narrated count one and told the court that on February 6, Bhunu, who was clothed in civilian attire and with two associates went to Agnes Koffi (33), an alleged mbanje seller pretending to be a buyers.

Upon meeting the complainant, the indicted produced his police identity card and solicited $30 from the complainant, but he only got $20.

They replicated the same methods on Kudakwashe Muduuri (22), who also gave them $20 and another $10 paid by his sister Juliet Muduuri, by EcoCash. Bhunu allegedly repeated the trick on Castra Madzokere and received $30. But the three victims, who live in the same area, reported the matter at Odzi Police Station, which led to Bhunu’s apprehension.
